The purpose of this test is to determine the presence of low levels of acidity in hydrocarbons and organic compounds. It is most often used for pure chemicals to determine if they have undergone decomposition or contamination through the manufacturing, transfer, or storage processes. The purpose of this test isof many of the specifications to certify chemicals/products for compliance.

In order to obtain this result the sample is first mixed with an equal part of water or alcohol. Then an indicator is added to the mixture which will allow the end point of the titration to be seen visually. Sodium Hydroxide is then added in small amounts till the endpoint is reached and the amount used is calculated to find the acidity as Acetic Acid.
