Position Summary
The Laboratory Technician / Chemist is responsible for conducting laboratory analyses and testing of petroleum, petrochemical, chemical, and related products in accordance with approved testing methods, client requirements, and international standards. The role ensures accurate, timely, and reliable test results while maintaining compliance with quality, safety, and operational procedures.
Key Responsibilities
Laboratory Testing & Analysis
- Perform routine and specialized laboratory testing of petroleum, petrochemical, chemical, and related products in accordance with ASTM, IP, ISO, UOP, and other applicable standards.
- Prepare samples, reagents, standards, and testing equipment required for analysis.
- Conduct physical, chemical, and analytical tests and accurately record results.
- Verify the accuracy and completeness of test data before submission for review.
- Ensure testing activities are completed within agreed turnaround times.
Sample Management
- Receive, label, register, and store samples in accordance with laboratory procedures.
- Maintain sample traceability throughout the testing process.
- Ensure proper handling, storage, and disposal of samples following laboratory requirements.
Quality Assurance & Compliance
- Adhere to all laboratory procedures, quality control protocols, and ISO 17025 requirements.
- Participate in quality control programs, proficiency testing, and internal audits.
- Maintain accurate laboratory records and documentation.
- Report non-conformities, equipment malfunctions, and quality concerns to management.
Equipment Maintenance
- Operate laboratory instruments and testing equipment safely and effectively.
- Perform routine equipment checks, calibrations, verifications, and maintenance activities.
- Report equipment faults and assist with troubleshooting when required.
- Ensure laboratory equipment remains clean and in good working condition.
Health, Safety, Security & Environment (HSSE)
- Comply with all Company HSSE policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
- Utilize appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe laboratory environment.
- Report accidents, incidents, near misses, and unsafe conditions immediately.
- Ensure proper handling, storage, and disposal of chemicals and hazardous materials.
Documentation & Reporting
- Accurately record test results and laboratory observations.
- Prepare laboratory worksheets, reports, and data entries as required.
- Assist in the preparation of Certificates of Analysis and laboratory reports.
- Maintain confidentiality of laboratory data and client information.
Continuous Improvement
- Participate in laboratory training and competency development programs.
- Support process improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing laboratory efficiency and quality.
- Stay updated on relevant testing methods, standards, and industry best practices.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree or Diploma in Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, or a related scientific discipline.
- Professional laboratory certifications are an advantage.
Experience
- Minimum 1–3 years of laboratory experience within the oil & gas, petroleum, petrochemical, inspection, or testing industry.
- Experience in petroleum testing laboratories is preferred.
- Familiarity with ASTM, IP, ISO, and other international testing standards is advantageous.
Knowledge & Skills
- Knowledge of petroleum and petrochemical laboratory testing methods.
- Understanding of laboratory quality systems and ISO 17025 requirements.
- Ability to operate laboratory instruments and analytical equipment.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
- Good analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Effective communication and teamwork abilities.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and laboratory information systems.

Working Conditions
The role is laboratory-based and may require occasional work at terminals, refineries, storage facilities, marine locations, or client sites. The position may involve shift work, overtime, and working with chemicals and hazardous materials in accordance with established safety procedures.
