Challenge
Inuk, an environmental services company, developed a methodology to quantify the avoided emissions associated with second-hand fashion. Their approach, used by Vestiaire Collective, a global platform for pre-owned clothing, estimates the greenhouse gas reductions achieved when consumers purchase second-hand garments instead of new ones.
To communicate these figures confidently and integrate them into voluntary carbon markets, Inuk sought an independent scientific review. They needed to demonstrate that their methodology was transparent, reproducible, and aligned with international standards. Without third-party critical review, Inuk and Vestiaire Collective faced potential credibility risks, including accusations of greenwashing.
Solution
Inuk engaged AmSpec Group’s Business Assurance & Sustainability (BA&S) division to perform an independent critical review of their methodology. AmSpec’s experts, led by Laurent Hegron, Business Developer for BA&S, and Dr. Alena Raymond, Senior Principal LCA Practitioner, conducted a structured validation process focusing on:
- Transparency and traceability of data sources and calculations
- Reproducibility testing to verify that results could be consistently replicated
- Scientific rigor through comparison with international frameworks such as
- ISO 14040 and 14044
- Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol Corporate Standard (2004)
- WBCSD Guidance on Avoided Emissions v2.0 (2025)
AmSpec evaluated the methodological integrity of Inuk’s framework through a combination of quantitative testing and qualitative assessment. This independent review complemented the broader peer validation process surrounding Inuk’s work, adding technical depth and reinforcing the transparency and scientific soundness of the methodology.
Following the evaluation, AmSpec delivered a detailed Independent Review Report that included key findings, improvement recommendations, and an assessment of scientific soundness. This review strengthened Inuk’s methodology, supporting the conversion of avoided emissions into voluntary carbon credits.
