Did you know that pigs are not only cute and intelligent creatures, but they can also help to keep pipelines clean and safe? Yes, you heard that right! Pipeline pigging is a method that uses devices called “pigs” to clean, inspect, and maintain pipelines. The pigging system is made up of a pig (not a real one, of course!), a launcher, and a receiver (also known as a “pig trap”). Depending on the pipeline’s condition, various pigging techniques and types of pigs are available, such as cleaning, batching, inspection, and specialty pigs. Pigs help to assess pipeline integrity, remove debris, separate different products, and even seal off pipeline sections during remedial activities.
